Alvarez Versus Smith - Who You Got?
Boxing has seen some great fights in the last couple of weeks and this fight looks to be another cracker, there are many people in Britain who think Smith really has got a great chance for the upset but is this a reality?
Canelo and Smith are the same age and up to now had to write on 2020 due to the pandemic which is very unusual for Canelo as he is a fighter who likes to stay active this is obviously also to do with the break up between him and golden boy.
Will experience play a part in this fight? as Canelo has had over double the amount of fights than what Smith has had. Canelo’s only loss came against Floyd Mayweather in which I believe really improved Canelo as a fighter, I think Canelo practised and practised some of the techniques used against him by Floyd and now he has mastered the himself.
The next stat we can look at the the massive reach advantage that Smith has will this be a factor in the fight? Smith could try to stay on the outside and box against Canelo and I do believe this tactic would cause Canelo problems but its pretty impossible to be able to do this for twelve rounds, sooner or later Canelo will get on the inside.
Using this reach advantage will surely be the tactic used by Joe Gallagher who is an astute trainer who was voted Ring magazine and UK boxing trainer of the year in 2015. Joe Gallagher also knows what it is like coming up against Canelo as another one of his fighters came up against Canelo Callum Smiths Brother Liam, who Canelo stopped with a gruesome body shot in the ninth round.
It is widely believed in the United Kingdom that Callum Smith is much better than his brother Liam and he will have a much better chance against Canelo. Looking at that body shot staying away from Canelo will definitely be the best bet Smith using straight punches and moving his feet would be a technique I think the English man will employ. When Canelo get’s past Smith’s reach Smith will have too either tie Canelo up so he’s unable to work on the inside or do something to hurt Canelo with a short punch on the inside like an uppercut.
The chance of this happening will be pretty slim as we have not seen Canelo hurt for a very long time. If you go back to the Kovalev fight which was Canelo’s last win Kovalev did manage to outbox Canelo for lots of rounds and keep him on the outside.
Canelo did not look spectacular in this fight has this given the blue print for Smith? Liam Smith had been in his brothers training camp giving him first hand advice of what he thinks he will need to do to beat Canelo. Canelo is ranked pound for pound number one for a reason, it sounds easy but in reality this is a much harder task.
Callum Smith’s last outing in which many people thought he was lucky to get the verdict against John Ryder was not that inspiring for Smith usually Smith can use his power and blow away his opponent inside a few rounds but on this night this was not the case.
This last outing made many people question Smith’s power maybe this is down to Smith struggling to get to the 168 pound weight limit? it’s pretty unbelievable looking at the size of smith how he ever managed to do this for so long. We all know the more times you boil down and the older you become it gets harder and harder.
Many British boxing trainer’s believe that Smith will cause a major upset I am struggling to see this I believe that Smith has the potential to be winning the fight but I think eventually Canelo will find a way to win by possibly a late knock out.
I could also see Smith winning the fight by a few rounds but I think the scorecards would show something else if Smith was to win on points I think he would have to win by a large amount of rounds to get the decision and I can’t see this happening.
I really can’t see a way in which anyone will have a chance of beating the new Golden Boy of boxing.
