The One Best Training Item To Become Amazing At Boxing

David Haye on the speedball

So you want to become amazing at boxing?

When everyone starts boxing they always seem to get the bug for it, which is not surprising. What a great sport we are all involved with no other sport can quite compete. Hitting the pads working out on the heavy bag or getting good on a speedball nothing really seems to come close, not even mentioning by far my favourite sparring.

Initially whether learning at your local club, online or one to one sessions everyone seems to like practising in their own time. Most people make a massive mistake in my opinion of buying a bag. At the start of your boxing journey I believe this is very detrimental to your training. When your coach is not there watching you this is where the mistakes start to form. Then when you go for your next session your coach has to spend all the time ironing your faults out, instead of working on new techniques.

The best equipment to use when your not at the gym when you starting out is the mirror.

Boxer shadowboxing in front of the mirror

The mirror is so good for getting good at boxing, when you have had a few sessions off a coach you know some of the basics:

  • Chin down

  • Hands high

  • Guard tight

  • Taking your hands straight back after you punch

  • Using the correct stance

  • Raising your shoulders

So practising all of these basics in front of the mirror you can spot when you are doing something wrong and correct it immediately.

So get practising perfectly in front of the mirror I will leave a couple of drills for you to be practising.

Each Round Three Minutes Long

Round One

Nice and relaxed just taking your time and getting nice and loose.

Round Two

Throwing one or two punches and then moving your feet either forward, back, left or right.

Round Three

Imagining you have got a boxer in front of you, throw shots an him and imagine he throws back at you and move out of the way.

Round Four

Practising stepping in with a punch and then stepping out before your opponent could hit you.

Round Five

Concentrating and pivoting every time you throw a punch. Make sure your driving the punch from the ground up.

Round Six

Block and then a counter.

Round Seven

Two punch combinations.

Round Eight

Punching moving forwards then backwards.

Have fun and remember not to try to punch too hard, nice and relaxed.
