Speedball - Ten Reasons Every Boxer Should Own One

Customer on speedball at Undisputed Boxing Gym

Undisputed Boxing really love speedballs, not loved by all gym’s and trainers alike but we ensure all of our boxers spend three rounds on them every time they train.

Ten benefits of the Speedball

Hand, Eye Coordination

Hand and eye coordination are a massive part of boxing and who is not going to benefit by having this aspect of their game improved?

Hand, Eye and Foot Coordination

We can take hand and eye coordination one step further when you add footwork to your speedball workout you are also improving your hand, eye and foot coordination.

Shoulder Endurance

When beginners start working the speedball they do not get to realise the endurance benefits, as using the speedball is very stop start at the beginning. Eventually once you have got better on the speedball you realise what a good workout the speedball is, this usually takes between ten and twenty goes on it to really notice a big improvement. As soon as this improvement is made you realise how tiring the workout is on your shoulders.

Keeps your guard tight

When the endurance kicks in and you get tired all boxers naturally drop their guard, that is why when you watch professional boxing, boxers get knocked out in the later rounds many times. The speedball works your shoulders that well it ensures that your fit enough to keep a good guard even when your tired.

Timing (Punching sooner)

For me the biggest reason to own a speedball is the fact as your timing gets better using the speedball, when you take this to sparring or a fight it teaches you to punch quicker without you even thinking about it, increasing the amount of punching opportunities you have during the round.

Better hand speed

As you use the speedball your hands get faster and faster this quite simply is only going to benefit your boxing.

Great home training option

With the speedball it fits really well into limited space and once fitted makes a great home work out tool. Many boxing home workout equipment encourages bad technique. The spar bar is a great example of this you really lose the form of your punches. With the speedball there is less to go wrong if you remember the basics.

Moves unlike the pads

Every time you throw a punch on the pads no matter how off target it is the punch will always land, unlike the speedball which is a moving target teaching your brain to hit some things that moves more like a head. No one will ever headbutt your punches like the pads do, the higher standard you get the move movement people will have which is replicated by a speedball.

Varied Training

When people have trained in boxing for years the speedball is a great way to keep your training varied and there is so many uses for one bit of equipment. I am going to write another blog post showing all the training you can do on a speedball.

Stress Relief

When you have a hard day at work there is no better feeling than smashing the speedball it really is one of the best stress relief forms out there.

Advice

When it comes to buying a speedball you get what you pay for and in my opinion you should spend as much as possible the ones we use in our gym are £500 and worth every penny. If you buy a cheap one then the noise it makes really travels far and would really annoy your neighbours.
